Dr Ashin Nandamala Bhivamsa

Biography of Sayadaw Dr. Nandamala Bhivamsa, based on his public biography timeline and teaching service records.

Dr Ashin Nandamala Bhivamsa served as the second Rector of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University and is also widely known through his leadership at the International Institute of Abhidhamma and Sitagu International Buddhist Academy.

The Sayadaw continues to serve the Sasana and Dhamma education through writing, teaching, preaching, meditation instruction, and youth cultural training courses.

Birth, First Education, and Higher Ordination

1301 / 1939

On the full moon day of Tabaung, March 22, 1939, a Saturday, he was born in Nyaung Pin Village, Sintgaing Township, Mandalay Region, to U San Hla and Daw Khin.

1305 / 1944

At the age of five, he began learning Myanmar language and Buddhist literature under U Kelatha, Sayadaw of Pawtawmu Monastery in Nyaung Pin Village.

1311 / 1949

At the age of ten, he became a novice at the Vipassana Gandhayon Monastery compound on Sagaing Hill, with the great Sankin Sayadaw as preceptor.

1321 / 1958

With the great Sankin Sayadaw as preceptor, he received higher ordination at the Sasanamanjari ordination hall of Maha Subodhayon Monastery.

Abhidhamma Examinations, Dhammacariya Titles, and Abhivamsa Titles

1314 / 1953

At the age of thirteen, he first passed the three levels of the Abhidhamma examination.

1317 / 1956

He passed the government Dhammacariya examination with distinction in two texts and received the Sasanadhaja Siripavara Dhammacariya title.

1320 / 1958

He received the Sasanalankara Samanekyaw title and, together with senior monks, established Maha Subodhayon Monastery in Sagaing.

1325-1327 / 1964-1966

He received the Yangon Cetiyangana Abhivamsa title, the Sasanadhaja Dhammacariya Vinaya Pali Paragu title, and the Mandalay Sakyasiha Abhivamsa title.

Teaching, Writing, Overseas Mission, and University Duties

1328 / 1967

At Zambudipa residence in Yangon, he served in the Tipitaka Pali-Myanmar dictionary project and also began studying English.

1332 / 1971

He wrote and compiled Dhamma literature and published books in both Myanmar and English.

1339 / 1980

He began serving as a member of the Sagaing Township Sangha Nayaka Committee and carried responsibilities in examination, curriculum, Vinaya, and Sasana committees.

1347-1358 / 1986-1997

He taught Myanmar language, Pali, Abhidhamma, and Buddhist literature in India, Sri Lanka, the United States, and other countries.

1350 / 1989

He received an M.A. in Buddhist Studies from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka.

1364 / 2003

He received a Ph.D from Magadh University in India with the dissertation A Study of Jainism According to Buddhist Literature.

1367-1381 / 2005-2019

He served as Rector of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University in Yangon.

Centers Founded for Dhamma Education, Social Work, and Healthcare

1371 / 2009

He served as Sasana Vamsa Ganadhipati Mahanayaka of Maha Subodhayon and established CBS Sagaing, Dhammavijjalar Subodhayon Monastery, and Saddhammajotaka Subodhayon Monastery.

1373 / 2012

He founded the Institute of Dhamma Education, a Dhamma Sahaya Sasana Center, at Aung Chan Thar Village in Pyin Oo Lwin.

1375 / 2014

He founded the Dayananda Foundation to support improvements in health and education for people in his native region.

1377 / 2016

He built and donated Mettananda Hospital and established IDE Yangon and Saccananda Dhamma Center in the Yangon highway area.
