March 9-11, 2017

At the conference held in Popa, Myanmar, representatives from other Theravada countries suggested and respectfully requested the establishment of an Abhidhamma University in Myanmar.

June 21, 2017

Under the guidance and advice of the Sitagu Sayadaw, the International Institute of Abhidhamma was established.

Objectives

The main objectives for founding the university are as follows.

  • To spread the Theravada Buddhist Abhidhamma throughout the world.
  • To sustain the capacity for Theravada Buddhist missionary service over the long term.

Distance learning courses expanded from domestic centers to overseas examination centers.

The distance learning program began with the second intake of the Abhidhamma University in 2019. Pali professor Daw Nan Myint led the department as head of distance learning.

The development of the online course from website-based instruction to teaching all courses through Zoom.

2015

U San Win established a university website and began the program. Students in Yangon, regional areas, and places beyond branch access who could communicate by Gmail were first taught through Gmail.

2019

When day classes could be taught at the school, the online program began using Google Meet and Google Classroom. Many students from distant areas attended, and about 500 students per year joined across Levels 1, 2, and 3.

April 2022

About 110 B.A (Abhidhammadesana) students who still needed to complete their final semester were gathered for online instruction, examinations, and paper submission. At present, all courses are being taught through Zoom.

September 2022

Plans were made to open the B.A class, the B.A (Hons) bridging class, and B.A (Hons) courses.
